Title: When the Last Feather Falls
Fandom: Diabolo
Pairing: Ren/Rai (Because it might as well be canon.)
Prompt: Ostracised from Society, Loss of Possessions, Falling, Septicemia/Infected Wounds
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 666 (Because you know I HAD to write a Diabolo fic of exactly 666 words.)
Summary: Set between the end of Volume 2 and the beginning of Volume 3. Ren learns, and quickly, to take responsibility for himself. In ways he never wanted to have to.

AN: Written, as the subject and tag say, for [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo. Masterpost with game card is here.

AN2: Does anyone actually read Diabolo fic anymore?

Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.

Ren had watched his mother kill herself, saw his home burn to the ground, lost everything that had ever been important to him, and discovered he was going to lose his humanity sooner rather than later on the same day he rediscovered the one person he could never live without. He didn’t know how he’d ever let himself forget, no matter how much Rai said it wasn’t his fault, that he’d only been a child in the hands of something more powerful. He’d remembered everything just in time to learn how little time he really had to accomplish what they needed to do. But right then, it had been almost okay. They’d been homeless and outcast, doing odd jobs for money when they needed food, living with only the clothes off their backs and whatever they could find. But it had been okay, because they’d been together.

Now, just months later, he’d lost Rai, too.

He stared at the ceiling long after Kyouya had gone to bed, unable to stop thinking about the encounter on the street. They’d given themselves the duty of saving the lost sheep of the flock, lost sheep who had almost to a person damned them as quickly as they had their own souls, but how could they do that when they couldn’t even save themselves?

Wouldn’t Rai be surprised? He always said Ren was incapable of thought.

At first, it seemed like it should have been a horrible dream. Ren was older, he should have fallen first. He should have died in Rai’s arms on Rai’s stupid dream mountain, not had to hunt him down to save him. How had he missed the signs? How had he let something like this happen? How could he still be here without the other half of a soul he’d already lost?

Without Rai, where else could he go?

He flopped over onto his side, staring at the wall, instead. When he’d gone out and gotten attacked by those people today, Rai had saved him. Except it hadn’t been Rai. He wasn’t dead, not yet, but he wasn’t himself anymore, either. He’d fallen, despite their promise. Didn’t he think of Ren’s feelings? Didn’t he worry about leaving Ren all alone in a world that hated him even more than usual thanks to the chaos?

Rai would have thought of him first. It obviously wasn’t Rai anymore.

Ren punched his pillow savagely, only the work of the last months saving it and possibly a good portion of the bed from exploding. His powers had been getting stronger by the day, but so had he. It couldn’t last forever, though. He’d be eighteen in a matter of weeks.

Would Rai still cry for him?

Eighteen. He’d almost forgotten about his birthday. Rai hadn’t mentioned it, either. Had Rai planned anything? Just in case? Ren obviously hadn’t, and he hated himself for it. Rai had been right, whenever they talked about it. Ren was too weak, too sentimental, too attached. Too broken. His need for Rai, this something that felt like a thorn in his heart, slowly poisoning everything in him with something he couldn’t name even if he wanted to, refused to go away.

How was he supposed to finish this on his own?

With a sigh that wanted to be a sob, he turned onto his stomach and buried his head under his pillow. He needed to sleep. He needed to sleep so that he could wake up in the morning and hunt Rai down just like they’d hunted countless lost sheep together, and then he’d end it, alone. Alone like he never should have been. Alone like he was because Rai had fallen without him. Rai had broken their promise and damaged things that Ren knew would never heal. Would never have a chance to heal.

He’d stop Rai. He’d save the world that didn’t want them.

He’d save them both.

Evil to Darkness. Amen.
