It came to Gojyo one night when they were all sleeping in the middle of fucking nowhere, crammed into the jeep. While Goku sat there and kicked him in the side in his sleep, and the damn monk acted like nothing was wrong with laying his seat back and taking up their fucking space just so he could get extra damn comfy. And Hakkai…
Well, he was pretty sure Hakkai wasn’t asleep, either, but that was beside the point.
It came to Gojyo one night that he was the only one of their whole damn bunch that knew how to yield to the inevitable. Who knew why, but there it was.
You could smack the monkey upside the head with a tree and he still wouldn’t budge. He was like some sort of unmovable force. Whatever happened, he bounced back.Not that Gojyo would ever admit to admiring that.
The monk, on the other hand, might as well be a tree for all he seemed to care about ‘the inevitable.’ Long as nothing got between him and his damn sutra.
Hakkai… Hakkai was something inevitable. He sat there all prim and proper, and you never suspected a thing till he had you wrapped around his little finger and seriously considering buying a real ashtray.
The way that smile could send shivers down your spine and a wakeup call to certain other body partsthat shouldn’t even be listening for a call from something without T&A all at once wasn’t natural. And it was like he didn’t even know what he was doing. He just was.
It was damn annoying.
Gojyo wasn’t gonna stand for it anymore, he decided. He was gonna stand up to that inevitable force, and he was gonna keep using his cans as ashtrays cause he’d always used his cans for ashtrays, and was he a damn man or not?!
Of course, about the time he was making his brave declaration, he looked up and caught green eyes watching him from the front seat. Wasn’t that always how it went?
“Mm? Gojyo? Can’t sleep?”
Yep, that voice didn’t sound sleepy at all. Hakkai hadn’t been sleeping. Gojyo felt a surge of vindication that he was learning to tell when the fucker was pretending. It’d taken long enough.
He levered himself out of the back seat, making sure to kick the monkey in the shin on his way out. He smirked at Hakkai’s disapproving look. A guy needed to defend his honor sometimes, kindness be damned.
“Gonna take a walk, stretch my legs without the stupid ape kickin’ ‘em. Won’t go far.” He pulled out a cigarette and his lighter, taking his time before looking back at Hakkai. He was pretending to be asleep. Figured. Gojyo wasn’t gonna think about it too much, he just headed off into the trees with his cigarette.
Which he wasn’t gonna put in an ashtray.
Course, it didn’t take long slouching against a tree in the middle of the night watching the tip of his cigarette smolder for Gojyo to start thinking again. He wasn’t the monkey, after all. Least he had better things than food on his mind. Hakkai was a damn sight better’n food.
…
He’d just thought that, hadn’t he?

Aw, fuck.
He flicked the butt of the cigarette to the ground when it started singeing his fingers. Damn thinking, making him waste a perfectly good cigarette.
Heh. Maybe he’d just make Hakkai pick up another pack next time he went shopping.
Or maybe he’d pick up another pack himself when he went with him. Someone had to carry the bags, right?
